  • NMC approves 10,650 new MBBS seats for 2024-25
  • 41 new medical colleges added, taking total to 816
  • Total MBBS seat count now at 1.37 lakh nationwide

In a major boost to India’s medical education infrastructure, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 10,650 new MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day 2024 commitment to add 75,000 new medical seats over five years.

Alongside the seat increase, 41 new medical colleges have been cleared, taking the total number of medical institutions in India to 816. Dr Abhijat Sheth, Chairperson of NMC, shared that the approved seats came from 170 applications, including both government (41) and private (129) colleges. This brings the total MBBS seat count to 1,37,600, including seats at Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

On the postgraduate front, the NMC has received over 3,500 proposals for new and renewed PG seats. An expected addition of 5,000 PG seats will take the nationwide tally to 67,000, pushing the combined increase of UG and PG seats to around 15,000 this year.

While some delays occurred in final approvals and counselling, officials confirmed they are on track to complete the process as scheduled. The NMC will also release a detailed academic calendar, including the timeline for accreditation and seat matrix approvals, soon.
