  • IIM Mumbai has proposed a satellite campus near the city, focusing on finance, tech, law, and interdisciplinary research.
  • Aligned with NEP 2020 and Maharashtra’s ‘Viksit Maharashtra 2047’ vision, the campus aims to blend academic rigor with real-world exposure.
  • The new campus seeks to shape future-ready leaders by leveraging Mumbai’s proximity to key industries and regulatory bodies.

Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) has made a formal proposal to the Maharashtra government to open a satellite campus in or near the city. The proposal, which was made to the state's Department of Higher and Technical Education, includes a detailed financial and infrastructural plan to back this new campus as a center of advanced academic programmes and inter-disciplinary research.

Under the institute, the satellite campus will provide a wide variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs with a special focus on cutting-edge and high-impact areas like economics, accounting and finance, technology and data science, and law and regulation.

This project is also aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes flexibility, innovation, and integral education to address the changing needs of a fast-evolving global context. It also aligns with Maharashtra's overall 'Viksit Maharashtra 2047' agenda, a visionary plan to drive the state to become a policy, finance, technology, and education leader before the mid-century point. IIM Mumbai's planned campus is well placed to help achieve this dream by creating an environment that combines the academic with the practical, real-world interaction.

Underlining the strategic purpose of the proposal, IIM Mumbai Director Prof. Manoj K. Tiwari highlighted the special opportunity this campus offers in crafting leadership of the future, especially in the areas of finance and technology. He pointed out that its location near regulatory authorities and important industry institutions would provide students with an unmatched learning experience, well imbibed in the latest policy controversies, innovation centers, and industry practices.

The new campus is expected to become a catalyst for producing forward-thinking leaders equipped to navigate and influence the increasingly complex interplay of business, governance, and technology. By combining world-class pedagogy with the real-time dynamics of Mumbai’s vibrant economic and regulatory landscape, the proposed campus aims to redefine management education and research. If approved, this initiative could significantly bolster Mumbai’s position as a global centre for education, innovation, and strategic thought leadership.
