AI to Be Introduced in School Curriculum from Class 3 Starting 2026
- AI and Computational Thinking to be included from Class 3 under the 2026–27 academic session.
- CBSE, NCERT, and IIT Madras to help design age-appropriate AI curriculum and resources.
- Focus on building early awareness, ethical use, and tech readiness among students.
The Union Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will officially become part of the school curriculum from Class 3 onwards beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. The move aims to help children understand the basics of AI early and develop a responsible approach to technology.
The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) has partnered with expert bodies including CBSE, NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) to design the curriculum under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
To ensure quality and relevance, CBSE has set up an expert committee led by Professor Karthik Raman from IIT Madras to develop the AI and Computational Thinking (CT) framework. The curriculum will include interactive learning, digital resources, and handbooks, all set to be ready by December 2025.

Initially, students will be introduced to how AI works in daily life. As they progress through school, the learning will advance to more complex topics, with elective subjects available in senior classes. The initiative also emphasizes the ethical use of AI and its potential for public good.
Educationists have welcomed the move, highlighting the need for teacher training and infrastructure readiness. “Teachers must be equipped to guide students safely through AI concepts,” said Jyoti Arora, Principal of Mount Abu Public School. Experts believe this policy will help nurture a tech-aware and responsible generation.
