Holistic Education Is The Future Of Tomorrow
The modern world is ever evolving and packs a challenge every step of the way. Times are changing and so is the need to keep up with it. We need to evolve to match its pace, or we will be left behind. To handle uncertainty, students will need to develop imagination, resilience, curiosity, and self-regulation; they must appreciate and respect ideas, perspectives, and values from others; they will also need to cope up with adversity to head forward.
This is where Holistic Education comes as an answer to these pressing challenges. According to UNESCO’s International Bureau of Education, “holistic learning approach seeks to fully activate all aspects of a learner's personality for more effective and comprehensive learning”. In simple terms, holistic education not just focuses on teaching facts to children and making them memorize. It focuses on all aspects of the learner’s personality. These experiences will inculcate curiosity and understanding, and most importantly involve them in the learning process. Holistic education provides dynamic educational framework aimed at fostering all round development of students through an integrated, holistic approach to learning.
What the study argues is that the overall progress of the child depends on their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.
Social Development - Social development is the process through which children learn to build relationships. It involves learning the values, knowledge, and skills necessary to understand how to get along with others.
Emotional Development - Emotional development means how children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling about any given situation. It is the development of being able to experience, manage and express emotions.
Intellectual Development – Intellectual Development means the growth of a child's ability to think and reason. It's about how well they organize their minds, ideas and thoughts to make sense of the world they live in.
Physical Development - Physical development is the growth and development of both the brain and body in childhood. This is ideally the growth and development of both brain and body and involves developing control of muscles and physical coordination.
The approach of holistic education does not limit them to just choose their stream but rather allows them to explore everything at their own desired pace. The movement to develop and inculcate a holistic education approach began in the 1980s in North America and currently, almost all educational institutes in America have adapted and involved the approach in their curriculum. The most important goal that holistic education achieves is that it combines knowledge with character.
An integral part of youth development is provided by teachers, mentors and educators. Their role is to help raise young people with the necessary tool sets for success, but also identify their innate talents and strengths to grow into the future of tomorrow. Standing in front of a classroom, with the future of their students at stake, is not an easy task. But teachers can make a difference creating leaders for life. Educators in schools play a pivotal role in the development of young people. With a combination of inspiration, empathy, and understanding, educators should always strive to equip young people with the right skill sets to succeed in an ever-evolving world.
However, Holistic Education is the future of tomorrow. It empowers the children with better self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, communication, and confidence. It will result in making them good citizens, individuals, and policymakers and allow them to create a positive impact on society.
Einstein’s famous quote goes, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” If the first thought that comes to mind is how come science and imagination go together, then you are putting limits on the process of education. Education is a course that helps in making sense of the world around you, and yourself. Gaining knowledge of varied subjects is as important as understanding each other’s connections and linkages’. So is developing social-emotional skills and helping oneself in maintaining mental stability. Many schools and colleges have recently welcomed initiatives on mental health. An integrated approach is going to be the need. Thus, the need of the hour is addressing not only the academic needs but also the emotional, social, and ethical needs of the children which comprise holistic education.
Governments, Institutions, and Educators are all realizing the importance of Holistic Education and the impact that it brings along. However, everyone together is including the approach in the policies, curriculum, and ways of teaching. Therefore, it is safe to say that Holistic Education is the future of tomorrow.
