German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Dr. Philipp Ackermann, underscored the expanding academic partnership between the two nations, noting that nearly 50,000 Indian students are currently studying in Germany. This makes India the largest source of international students in the country.

Dr. Ackermann made these comments at an event in New Delhi celebrating the 65th anniversary of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in India, marking its century-long dedication to promoting global academic cooperation. The event highlighted the growing vibrancy of academic exchange between India and Germany.

“The Indo-German partnership in science and education is stronger than ever. It is one of the foundational elements of our bilateral ties”, Dr. Ackermann stated, praising the robust academic cooperation that has seen remarkable growth in recent years. He further noted that Indian scientists have made significant contributions to Germany’s research landscape, driving innovation with their expertise and discoveries.

As India seeks to strengthen its academic relationship with Germany, over 80 German universities and research institutions are set to engage in initiatives designed to boost both academic and research partnerships. This move comes as India’s academic and research infrastructure expands, opening up new avenues for bilateral collaboration. At the event, DAAD also introduced a strategy paper outlining its plan to enhance academic ties with India. The paper highlights the vast potential for scientific and academic exchange and offers actionable recommendations for German universities to build closer connections with India.

Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, President of DAAD, stressed the growing importance of academic cooperation with India, particularly in the context of global geopolitical shifts. “India is quickly becoming a global leader in science and innovation. The dynamic development of India’s higher education and research sectors offers immense opportunities for collaboration in areas ranging from student mobility to research partnerships and the recruitment of skilled labor”, says Mukherjee.
