Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) has announced the introduction of several new minor and elective courses for BTech, management, and pharmacy students starting from the 2025-26 academic session. This initiative will affect over 750 government and private engineering colleges affiliated with AKTU across Uttar Pradesh.
The newly approved subjects include Vedic mathematics, Indian music, astronomy, women’s health, Sanskrit, town planning, architecture, wellness, and psychology. AKTU Vice Chancellor Prof J P Pandey said these courses aim to provide students with knowledge beyond their core subjects and help in their overall development.
The university plans to use online study materials and mentoring to teach these courses. In collaboration with Raj Bhavan, AKTU will also introduce a minor course focusing on women’s health. Additionally, a minor course on space science is under development, opening new employment opportunities for students.
Prof Pandey highlighted that these courses are part of a larger effort to incorporate the Indian knowledge system into the curriculum. This includes India’s rich traditions in philosophy, science, art, medicine, and mathematics. The move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages connecting students to their cultural roots.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has supported this initiative by preparing a model curriculum that promotes value education alongside technical knowledge. AKTU’s new courses aim to equip students with diverse skills and broaden their career prospects.
