Pranav Patel
Program Director
In a country like India, where ancient wisdom and modern challenges converge, a distinctive leadership model is emerging, one that blends intellectual rigor with unwavering adherence to values and resilience with principled action. This is where Pranav Patel, who currently serves as the Program Director at the School of Ultimate Leadership (SOUL), stands out. A former finance professional has made a name for himself due to his singular combination of business wisdom and profound understanding grounded in Indian leadership philosophies.
His work draws heavily on the timeless principles from Kautilya’s Arthashastra, which provide a robust framework for addressing contemporary leadership challenges through ethical governance and strategic foresight. Drawing inspiration from ancient texts and teachings, he has become a sought-after expert in leadership development, known for cultivating leaders who are guided by integrity, discipline, and value based decision-making.
Pranav’s approach is anchored in balance, foresight, and ethical clarity, which are qualities vital for principled leadership in today’s rapidly evolving business and political environments. As innovation and digital transformation reshape society, effective leaders must be intellectually sharp, disciplined, and guided by enduring values.
In business, government, and beyond, there is a growing demand for leaders who act decisively, build resilient teams, and deliver sustainable results. With organizations facing constant change, leadership grounded in solid principles has become essential, making value-driven coaching a necessity rather than an option, especially in India, where ancient wisdom meets modern challenges.
The Trajectory into Leadership Coaching
Prior to being a leadership coach, Pranav established a sound professional career in the Field of finance and Banking. He was an Associate Vice President at HSBC Bank and also achieved the Certified Financial Planner designation, besides clearing CFA Level 1 successfully. Strong passion for more learning, though, made him take an unorthodox path in the field of study of Kautilya’s Arthashastra at the University of Mumbai.
The Arthashastra, a text over 2,300 years old, is timeless in its wisdom, focusing not just on governance and economics but on the profound development of inner leadership, which contrasts with many Western leadership philosophies that tend to emphasize external representation and outcomes. Initially believed to be a treatise on economics and governance, Pranav found that Arthashastra is indeed a comprehensive leadership handbook on training the future rulers.
That epiphany opened his mind very much and led him to change his course from finance to leadership training. Pranav asserts, “The Arthashastra is just not a book on statecraft. It’s a guide to developing the inner strength of a leader”. His path in leadership development became more formalized when he joined a six-month residential program on the Arthashastra, which eventually developed into a two-year Master’s in Leadership Science at the University of Mumbai. This course defined his leadership philosophy and led him to meet Dr Radhakrishnan Pillai, a mentor and a guide. Together, they co-founded Chanakya Aanvikshiki, a company with an unconventional leadership model.
With this company, Pranav created leadership programs for family businesses, corporate leaders, public servants, politicians, and even for the armed forces. His strategy was holistic, systematic learning, individual coaching, off-sites in nature, and powerful keynote speaking. The aim was always the same to create leaders from the inside out.
This approach, grounded in the timeless principles of Kautilya, underscores the importance of inner growth as a foundation for effective leadership, something often overlooked in more externally driven leadership paradigms.
A significant step was when Pranav was invited to IIT Kharagpur to help install the Partha Ghosh Academy of Leadership, conceived by Dr Partha Ghosh. Subsequently, he took the role of Program Director at the School of Ultimate Leadership, a vision conceived by India’s Honorable Prime Minister. This school aims to build political, social, and public policy leaders. Here, Pranav continues to develop high-impact leadership programs that integrate values, discipline, and vision.
Ageless Wisdom & Practical Application
Pranav’s leadership coaching style is a blend of ageless wisdom and real-world tools. His fundamental premise is that leadership is not necessarily about skills or tactics, but about who the leader is at his or her essence. His coaching sessions are structured to facilitate selfreflection and alignment with foundational principles. He believes, “The coach’s role is to help leaders clarify their values and align their actions with enduring principles”. His methodology intertwines Indian systems of knowledge with contemporary systems.
A key component of this approach is his adoption of Kautilya’s leadership framework, the Saptanga (Seven Pillars of Leadership), which includes Swami (Leader), Amatya (Minister/Manager),Janapada (People/ Market), Durga (Infrastructure), Kosha (Finance), Danda (Team/People Management), and Mitra (Alliances/Collaborations). This model offers a holistic, principles-based approach to leadership, emphasizing ethical collaboration, strategic discipline, and the application of value-driven frameworks. The Arthashastra’s teachings, in particular, are pivotal. Kautilya’s model, which is taught by him, imparts three essential aspects to leadership, namely self discipline, long-term thinking, and value-based decision making.

His coaching methodology embodies these ideals. Each coaching engagement begins with a profound conversation not only about business objectives, but also about the leader’s personal values and life vision. From there, he assists them in aligning their leadership objectives with their personal purpose. This involves defining legacy in five areas, namely self, family, social circle, nation, and profession. Leaders are asked to identify their ‘Swadharma’, their personal calling, which serves as their inner compass.
In practice, Pranav’s training is quite customized. He trains leaders from business, corporates, politics, government services, and even the military. His framework adjusts to every industry but remains centered on behavior, discipline, and mindset. A business leader, for example, might require assistance in terms of innovation and agility, whereas one who is in public administration might need assistance in terms of policy choices and people management. He customizes his sessions to this end, keeping every session practical and meaningful. He also prioritizes blending work and life. Rather than encouraging conventional work-life balance, he coaches leaders to live both roles fully and without separation.
He shows them that at work, it’s all about productive hours, while at home, physical and emotional presence takes center stage. This realization has given many leaders their peace and sense of purpose back. A key aspect of his coaching is guiding leaders to confront challenges with clarity and resilience, using setbacks as opportunities for principled growth. Through structured reflection and disciplined goal-setting, he helps leaders maintain focus on their core mission and values.
Setbacks are regarded as learning points, and each failure is viewed in the context of long-term vision. “Success is not about perfection, but about steadfast alignment with core values and principles”, observes Pranav. The Saptanga model, which underpins his framework, enables leaders to develop a balanced, collaborative, and values-driven approach to leadership, ensuring sustained excellence and ethical impact.
