Uttam Singh, Principal, Jindal Public SchoolThe children of today are gearing up to become adults tomorrow. The future of our country is reflected through quality of the present education system. Any educational institution must successfully stimulate curiosity in the infant growing mind. The initial impressions later on build the character and personality of a child. This learning process is a crucial aspect where the education system has a very important role to play. The education system ensures a well rounded development and grooms our cognitive abilities. In this 21st century education has become a part of our basic necessities in life and is available to every child. Thus, the impact of education system on children is undeniably important and a more systematic approach towards education is essential.

A new age phenomenon has given birth to learning of life skills at educational spaces which previously did not exist in our society. This is definitely path breaking and revolutionary because it changes the way education is being imparted to children. Many new schools are adapting this way of teaching. Life skills are a set of basic skills acquired through life experiences, commonly encountered in daily life. These capabilities do not develop without support, they have to be learned from our everyday experiences at home or at school or work. For an individual adapting to change it is not only essential to
master life skills but to deal with them with a positive attitude. Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiation skills, organizational skills, ability to communicate or collaborate, social and personal contribution to society as a citizen are some of basic life decisions we take on a regular basis.

They affect people’s lives, interpersonal & social relationships and our sense of judgment. The education system has the responsibility to inculcate these life skills along with the bookish knowledge. People have appreciated the idea of education being more than a means to acquire degrees and monetary success. So, the idea of including life skills as a part of education system is a welcoming thought. With a world full of wrongdoings and negative influences it is crucial to help children master ways to cope up with post school environment. Life skills should be a part of how quality education is conceptualized, and woven throughout the formal primary and secondary education curriculum.

Learning the art of teamwork will help an individual to learn mutual respect, communication and stress management which will help achieve success in life. Life skills included in curriculum will help improve social skills, thinking skills and emotional skills of students. Controlling the emotions will help students handle emotional stress and the way they feel & deal with people. These skills help students blend well in society and workplace as well. The main intention of including life skills into the curriculum is to help develop their unique way of dealing with problems and decision-making. It helps children realize the consequence of their actions. Also, to create an understanding of how society works, what are our responsibilities as social beings?

The incorporation of life skills will strengthen the bond between teachers and students enabling a better flow of knowledge and creative environment. With knowledge and learning when students are taught how to implement them in real life they automatically are more self-motivated and confident. Confidence in themselves help them deal with significant life changes and challenges like bullying or discrimination. It gives them a voice in the society. Children have a positive attitude and create healthy environment for those around them. This creates active, informed and responsible citizens, who take responsibility for their own actions and contribute to the community they are part of while preparing them for the challenges & opportunities of adult life.
