The University of Mumbai (erstwhile University of Bombay) or MU is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It was established in 1857 consequent upon “Wood's Education Dispatch”, and is also one amongst the first three Universities in India. The
University was modelled on similar universities in the United Kingdom, specifically the University of London

MU offers a plethora of courses like Life Science, Oceanography, Law, and Engineering, to name a few which are conducted by its highly acclaimed and experienced faculty. Home to several institutes and centres like Academy of Administrative Careers, Centre for Cultural Studies, Institute of Modern Language and many more, the university is the alma mater to some of the most notable personalities like B. R Ambedkar, Lal Krishna Advani, Moraji Desai, and Dadasaheb Phalke among several others. The total number of enrolled students at the university is 549,432 and currently has 711 affiliated colleges.
With an aim to propagate education seamlessly, the university offers the comfort of university video lectures, under the University Grant Commission. Additionally, its Distance & Open Learning is a distinct approach to impart education to learners who are removed in space and/or time from the teachers or the teaching institution on account of economic, social and consideration. Jawaharlal Nehru Library(JNL)is the central library with technology and applied research journals at its affiliated branches at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies and Tata Memorial Hospital. Its Government Law College, Mumbai remains the most prominent institute since the university's inception.
