Math Buddy: Transforming Math Teaching and Learning

Bharathy & Kannan Bhardwaj,Founders“Where’s the fun in Math, mom?” asks nine-year-old Rohit. His mom has been coaxing him to solve the sums for the last half-an-hour. His statement reflects his reason; Math is boring! Rohit like many other children just doesn’t find enough fun in the subject. Right now, there is a gap in the way Math is being taught and learnt in schools. Let’s put it in algebraic terms. If X equals to children who feel problem solving in Math is like walking on a tightrope and Y equals to parents menaced by overloaded school homework, the sum of the variables is Z; a grand Math failure! Kannan Bharadwaj, a B.Tech graduate from IIT Chennai with Master’s degree from US; and Bharathy Bharadwaj, a Production Engineering graduate from MIT, Chennai and a Master’s degree holder in Computer Science from US; together are bridging this gap through their well-researched solution, ‘Math Buddy’, a complete math learning and teaching solution that not only helps children in learning math with understanding, but also makes them fall in love with the subject.

“We have always wanted to do
something that can create an impact on the society. When we came back from the US, we were looking for tools to help our son, who was in kindergarten at that time, learn through activities. As we did research, we saw that there were programs that were either based on animations or videos. We firmly believed that Math as a subject is ideal for learning by exploration. Since we both had programming and graphics background, we started creating tools ourselves and that is how Math Buddy was born,” says Bharathy Bharadwaj, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Concept Learning Technologies.

Over time, this has grown into a complete math teaching and learning solution that harnesses the power of hands-on activity based learning with a virtual interactive software that could be used for teaching and for children to practice Math sitting in front of the computer.

Reforming Mathematics Teaching and Learning
Whether it is hands-on instruments or interactive virtual activities, the firm believes that Math is best understood by doing it. This way, children experience math concepts in a way they will never forget. “We are not just an e-learning company or a kits provider. We provide a complete solution and work closely with schools to ensure that teachers are trained well and support them so that children get benefited at the end of the day. Our goal is to transform the way Math is taught and learnt in schools and we try to do everything possible to make this happen” says Kannan Bharadwaj, Co-Founder & CEO,
Concept Learning Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

The advantage of Math Buddy instruments is the quality and safety, as well as the fact that these come with curriculum aligned activity manuals to make it easy to use. With over 1300 playful and interactive activities from grades 1 to 10, Math Buddy software is accessible from any where, anytime using their cloud platform for children to practice. In schools, the software is installed in an offline mode so that teachers can teach the concepts from the classrooms and make each and every student participate.

“Math Buddy team constantly works with schools to ensure that it is used well. We even have a mobile app with training videos for any new teacher joining the school to learn how to do the activities,” adds Bharathy.

Today, with its team of 20, Math Buddy works with over 250 schools across India and abroad. They also conduct an online Math Olympiad ‘Mathlathon’ for children to show off their math skills and compete with their peers from all over the world. “It is slowly becoming a global platform since we had students from 5 different countries - India, China, Japan, United States and Kazakhstan participate in the most recent edition that we conducted in October 2017,” says Bharathy. In the years to come, the firm expects to keep innovating and add intelligence and personalization into the platform so that children are guided as per their abilities and can learn at their own pace.
