STEM is an education educational programme that focuses largely on the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
STEM schools and programs are approached on key educational subjects and apply to the specific elements of each subject. STEM focused learning programs are spread from preschool through master's degree programs, depending on resources within a given school district or region.
Anurag Gupta, Co-Founder of STEMROBO Technologies, says, "Innovation in the education field, particularly in the edtech segment, was missing in India. Indian consumers have always been the consumers and not inventors."
"Regardless, there is enough scope for disruption by STEM education for K-12 students, even in rural areas. STEM education helps students transform their minds in the form of centralized innovation and fosters their ability to solve problems," he says.
STEM is an evolving movement in education worldwide. STEM based learning programs are aimed to increase students' interest in pursuing higher education and careers in those fields. STEM education typically uses a newer model of mixed learning that combines traditional classroom teaching with online learning and hands-on activities. Therefore this model aims to give students the opportunity to explore different new ways of learning and problem solving.
The programme has companies like FORD, Maruti Suzuki that are supporting and funding the STEM education. They donate and arrange seminars across the country to motivate and give opportunities to the students who are not accessible to them.
The initiative overall has raised over Rs 20 crores in funds, and engaged over 5 lakh students and 15 thousand educators in India.
"The scope for STEM education in India is massive. With the NEP also recognising the need for a system that encourages critical thinking, hands-on working and creativity,STEM education is poised to be the next major revolution in the Indian education system,"says Dr.Sridhar G, Founder of Deeksha STEM.
I-STEM is a national portal that provides different scientific programmes and activities. It is initiated by the office of Principal Scientific Adviser, government of India. The portal was launched by Prime Minister NarendraModi.
The dynamism in the portal has motivated and supported scientists, researchers thereby helping build an R&D ecosystem. The portal is designed in a way to instil the infamous ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat' campaign of the Modi government. Moreover it will also allow the researchers to make maximum use of the funds provided, by using innovative ideas and designs which will contribute in the technological advancements.
It also helps and provides guidance in building skill development modules to the academic institutions to and the portal was created in collaboration with the SWAYAM initiative of the government of India.
The world community for STEM education will regulate world fairs on science, robotics and other related activities; it will help the students showcase their talent at global competitions like First Lego League and World Robot Olympiad.
The Characteristics of the initiative includes engagement of employees, learning coding and STEM with robotics. The use of low cost per student and adapting inclusiveness by providing mentoring to student teams and encouraging participation in competitions. This will therefore provide a platform to think beyond especially in the field of innovation, design and creativity.
In the United States, in order to support the STEM education and the teachers, the government had started a campaign named "Educate to innovate". It will thus boost the morale of the teachers and the schools offering STEM education.
Hence the STEM education is focused on implementing applications which would train the individuals and help them to be efficient and skilled to bring about changes and develop minds which would create a better world in the future.
