Minister of Mines’ National Geoscience Award Goes to Prof. Vikrant Jain of IITGN

SI TeamThe Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has honored geoscientist Prof. Vikrant Jain, Earth Sciences, IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN), with the prestigious National Geoscience Award. The award was presented by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Cabinet Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal & Mines, under the Applied Geosciences category. It was granted at a function held in New Delhi.

This award is presented to Prof. Vikrant to honor his significant contributions in the area of River Science. It is rather a new research
field under the Applied Geosciences.

Prof. Vikrant Jain is a geomorphologist & geoscientist. He works in the area of River Science, its applications in stream management and Earth Surface Processes. Prof. Vikrant has also enormously worked on the Himalayan Rivers and most recently began his work on the Peninsular Rivers as well. He is currently striving to develop the basic understanding over the variability in river appearance and behavior through quantitative framework. In order to apply this knowledge in the sustainable stream management practices.

Sharing his thoughts on this achievement, Prof Vikrant states, “I feel extremely honored that my work in this area has been recognized. River science is an emerging research area of Geoscience. This award to my research lab signifies river studies as an important component of geoscience studies in India”.

These awards are annually presented to the geoscientist, engineers, technologists, academicians as recognitions to their extraordinary achievements and exceptional contributions towards the fundamental or applied geosciences, mining, and allied areas.
