Improved U.S. Student Visa Process Eases Path for Indian Applicants

- U.S. Embassy cuts visa backlog, reducing wait times.
- Improvements driven by staffing, tech upgrades, and Interview Waiver Program.
- New rule is visa interviews must happen in home country only.
Indian students aiming to study in the U.S. can finally breathe easier, as the student visa process has significantly improved in 2025. After years of long delays and wait times stretching beyond 500 days in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi, the average wait for a student visa appointment has now dropped to about two months.
This change is the result of several efforts by the U.S. Embassy in India, including increased staffing, digital upgrades, and a focused push to clear the application backlog. A major contributor has been the expansion of the Interview Waiver Program (IWP), which allows eligible students, especially those renewing visas to skip the in-person interview. These applications are now being processed in as little as three weeks.
However, a key policy change requires all student visa interviews to now take place only in the applicant’s home country or legal residence. This means students can no longer apply from third countries to avoid long wait times, a practice that had gained popularity in recent years. Despite this, the smoother process is expected to help even more Indian students reach U.S. campuses in upcoming intakes.
