The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced a novel initiative that allows members of the public to tour the research laboratories. Dubbed 'IIT Madras for All', this programme seeks to offer students, researchers, and the general public firsthand access to the advanced scientific research conducted here and the cutting-edge facilities within the institute.

Visitors will have the opportunity to visit four National Research Centers, 11 Institute Research Centers, and 15 Centers of Excellence, plus more than 90 focused laboratories at IIT Madras. This state-of-the-art infrastructure will be found across all disciplines: engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence, robotics, and more. The opportunity to meet the researchers and faculty will give visitors insight into the ground-breaking work taking place here.

As part of this initiative, anyone interested can book visits to the labs on Fridays and Saturdays. The programme also enables visitors to interact with researchers and faculty, giving them insights into cutting-edge innovations and the technologies under development at IIT Madras. Visitors will get an opportunity to see the research spaces across various disciplines such as engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence, robotics, and more.

Bookings for these visits are mandatory and can be made via a dedicated web portal provided by IIT Madras. The institute has set up the programme to make science and technology more accessible and relatable to the public, while also sparking interest among young students to pursue education and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

The “IIT Madras for All” programme is free of charge for visitors, but the institute has encouraged bookings to be done at least two weeks in advance to manage crowd control and ensure an organised experience. School groups, college students, educators, and science enthusiasts are the primary audience for these visits, although individuals can also sign up.

IIT Madras has developed this initiative to strengthen the connection between academia and society. It plans to expand the scope of this programme over time, potentially adding workshops, demonstrations, and interactive sessions to further engage visitors.

This opportunity is expected to provide visitors with a better understanding of how the institution contributes to national and global advancements in technology, science, and innovation.
