As part of this vision, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with L'Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile(ENAC), a respected French establishment, to launch its newly conceptualised course on 'Aviation Safety Management' specific to the Indian Civil Aviation industry. In collaboration with Airbus, the effort seeks to enhance safety education in the region commensurate with rapidly increasing aviation safety in India.
The inaugural batch, limited to 30 participants, is set to begin in January 2025, with registration closing on December 15.
Spanning two years, the programme includes in-person sessions: one week every two months in the first year and one week per month in the second year, with faculty members travelling from France to facilitate the courses throughout the programme. The IIT Madras initiative incorporates a six-month project or dissertation, addressing the complexities of air transport as an evolving macro-system. Safety is governed by a set of regulatory requirements that, while established for many years, continue to change. Beyond regulations and technical advancements, engaging all organisational actors at every level is essential for fostering a culture of safety. According to IIT Madras, effective Safety Management poses significant challenges, necessitating skills that include communication, leadership, and assertiveness.
The Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti, shared his exhilaration at the collaboration and said, "It would be a boon for all the travelers coming and going out of India as it would enhance safety at all levels of passenger travel across the country." He said that with increased air travel comes many safety issues; hence, it calls for an ongoing education and skill-building of the workforce-a requirement this program will help fulfill to improve passenger safety.
