• IIT Delhi announced its inaugural Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry, starting in the 2025-26 academic year.
• The course is open to JEE Advanced 2025 qualifiers, with admission via JoSAA counselling.
• The programme aims to bridge the gap between theoretical chemistry and practical engineering applications.

India's premier tech institution has announced its very first Bachelor of Science (BS) degree programme in Chemistry.

The four-year programme will commence from the 2025-26 academic year and is available to students who clear JEE Advanced 2025 and register through the JoSAA counselling portal.

So, what sets this programme apart, It's meant to bridge a gap many students aren't even aware exists -- between conventional chemistry degrees and more application-oriented engineering thinking.

Most engineering graduates aren't well-grounded in science, and chemistry graduates are often deprived of an understanding of how those principles are used in reality, says IIT Delhi. This new BS course is meant to correct that.

Students will receive a mix of fundamental science, engineering fundamentals, and contemporary tech expertise. The initial year is dedicated to fundamental science and engineering studies.

From the second year on, students specialize in major chemistry subjects, followed by interdisciplinary elective and research activities in the third and fourth years. Even a Minor in another course is an available option.

Graduates can expect to be ready for a range of careers in pharma, semiconductors, oil and gas, defence, automotive, research, and chemical consulting.

This BS Chemistry programme is part of IIT Delhi’s larger academic revamp to make degrees more flexible and aligned with today’s job market.

It follows a broader curriculum update for UG, PG, and PhD programmes, all set to roll out in 2025-26.
