The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to create a comprehensive monograph titled 'Bharatiya Ganit Parampara' to document India’s rich legacy and achievements in mathematics. Planned to span 150-175 pages, the work will highlight major mathematical discoveries and advancements from ancient, medieval, and modern periods, reflecting the country’s long-standing contributions to the field. The initiative, recently approved at the board’s governing body meeting, aligns with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on integrating India’s knowledge traditions into the curriculum while ensuring they remain globally relevant.
According to CBSE officials, the monograph will be developed in collaboration with an academic partner agency, selected through an open process, and will be made available in both digital and printed formats for schools, students, and teachers. The publication will explore the applications of Indian mathematics in fields such as astronomy, architecture, trade, and education. It will include biographical sketches of eminent mathematicians, timelines of key developments, and interactive illustrations designed to engage students.
To ensure authenticity and depth, the monograph will feature translated Sanskrit shlokas alongside their original texts, accompanied by source references for verification. It will also document landmark works like the Sulba Sutras, Aryabhatiya, Brahmasphutasiddhanta, and Lilavati, as well as the influential contributions of the Kerala School of Mathematics. Descriptions will cover the philosophies of different schools of thought and the lasting impact of these mathematical advancements on scientific and cultural progress.

CBSE plans to set up an expert advisory committee to oversee the structure and content of the monograph. This panel will include historians of mathematics, Sanskrit scholars, experienced mathematics teachers, and academicians to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and scholarly value.
Funding for the project will come from the Academic Unit’s budget allocated for curriculum research and the development of educational resources, with provisions for special approval if required. By compiling this authoritative resource, CBSE aims not only to preserve India’s mathematical heritage but also to inspire future generations with knowledge that is deeply rooted in cultural history while remaining relevant in the modern academic landscape.
