The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently conducted an orientation session for school principals and counselors to share key details about the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which is now a major component of India's higher education entrance process. The session was conducted online and was intended to improve awareness about CUET among school leaders and guidance counselors so that they are adequately prepared to counsel students through this changing scenario.
The CUET, launched by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in 2022, was meant to establish a common entrance test for undergraduate admissions into central universities all over India. With growing significance, particularly following its inclusion as a major parameter for admission to some of the most elite institutions, it has been a matter of increasing interest and concern for educators.
In the course of the session, officials from CBSE pointed out the format and aspects of the CUET, how it is different from conventional admission procedures. They also brought to the fore the applicability of CUET in the larger scheme of academic assessment, as well as the respective subjects and eligibility criteria that the students need to be aware of. Further details regarding registration procedures, preparation tactics, and the role of school counselors in mentoring students through this new process were also covered.
One of the primary areas covered during the orientation was the intervention of school principals and counselors in preparing students for the CUET. They were urged to develop awareness and ease the proper resources and techniques for the students to perform better in this exam. Particular focus was placed upon the increasing role of CUET in view of its greater incorporation into the admission processes of most central universities, along with the likely effect on the career paths of students.
The CBSE stressed that educational leaders should remain current on any updates or changes in the CUET system, as the examination pattern and requirements may change over time. This would allow school administrators and counselors to advise students correctly and effectively. The session was also an opportunity for teachers to mingle, exchange stories, and clarify questions regarding CUET.
By the end of the session, participants were more confident in their ability to guide students through the CUET application process. CBSE's move to facilitate greater collaboration between schools and the examination board has been well-received, as it encourages a more streamlined and informed process for one of the most critical phases of a student's academic journey.
