A former Indian MLA, A.C.Shanmugam is one of the most popular figures in the political spheres of South India, known for his rigorous work done for the upliftment of the Mudaliar caste of Tamil Nadu. A. C. Shanmugam is also the founder and president of the New Justice Party, a political party of Tamil Nadu, India.

Apart from his political acumen, A.C Shanmugam also holds the rare distinction of being the Founding member of several educational institutes in South India, which includes Raja Rajeswari Group of Institutions & Dr. M.G.R. Educational & Research University. As a result of his continuous measures towards the upliftment of education, A.C Shanmugam has been conferred the Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, U.K.
